Inspiring Construction
That the Parliament welcomes the Inspiring Construction event in St Andrew Square Gardens, Edinburgh, on 4-5 June 2018; considers that it is widely reported that the construction industry has an aging workforce and projected skills shortages, therefore influential stakeholders across the supply chain came together to promote the industry and the many varied and desirable career paths that it can offer and the breadth of roles within construction to help young people make an informed choice about their future careers; notes that the event featured apprentices demonstrating traditional building skills, including masonry, slate roofing, joinery and painting and decorating; recognises that the event was a collaboration that included the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, Edinburgh College, Fife Council, Stone Federation Great Britain, Historic Environment Scotland, Architecture & Design Scotland, Scottish Contractors Group, Developing the Young Workforce Edinburgh, Midlothian & East Lothian, Essential Edinburgh, Built Environment Forum Scotland and CITB Scotland; notes that the primary purpose of the event was to allow Edinburgh pupils from across the city to try the traditional building trades being demonstrated by local apprentices but was also open to members of the public for advice, with the aim of highlighting the importance of traditional building skills in the construction sector, and welcomes the ongoing work of all partner agencies to draw attention to the necessity for traditional building skills and, in turn, help to create a hi-tech, world-class industry with outstanding career prospects, helping companies to skill-proof their businesses, invest in skills and plan for the future.

That the Parliament welcomes the Inspiring Construction event in Falkirk town centre on 7-8 June 2018; understands that this event featured apprentices and tradespersons demonstrating traditional building skills, including masonry, slate roofing, cobbling and signwriting; recognises that the event was a collaboration that included the National Federation of Roofing Contractors, Falkirk Townscape Heritage Initiative, Stone Federation Great Britain, Historic Environment Scotland, Ross Hastie Signs, Scottish Contractors Group, Falkirk Council, Falkirk Delivers, Built Environment Forum Scotland and CITB Scotland; notes that the primary purpose of the event was to allow pupils from across Falkirk to try the traditional building trades being demonstrated by local apprentices, but was also open to members of the public for advice on how to repair and maintain their homes and to showcase the regeneration of the town centre through the Falkirk Townscape Heritage Initiative, and welcomes the ongoing work of all partner agencies to draw attention to the necessity for traditional building skills and, in turn, help to create a hi-tech, world-class industry with outstanding career prospects, helping companies to skill-proof their businesses, invest in skills and plan for the future.
