DESCRIPTION:Following the huge success of previous traditional building skills demonstrations in Glasgow\, the Glasgow Traditional Building Forum has organised another event in the city centre which will allow local school children the opportunity to enjoy a mini-masterclass in five essential trades to the traditional building sector. \n \n \n \nSchool children from across Glasgow will be given a mini-masterclass from local apprentices at both West Scotland College and City of Glasgow College\, overseen by lecturers from the colleges. \n \nHomeowners will also be given the opportunity ask questions about how to repair and maintain their traditionally built homes. With 20% of Scotland’s homes being traditionally built (pre 1919) and 67% of these having been identified as not being wind and watertight (Scottish Housing Condition Survey 2016) this event in the city centre will give local homeowners an idea opportunity to discuss issues and seek guidance from professionals in the area.

There will be opportunities for visitors and members of the public to have a go too! \n \n \nThe traditional skills included are as follows: \n\nStone Masonry\nSlating\nJoinery\nPainting\n\nWe are particularly pleased that Barbara Cummins\, Director of Heritage Management at Historic Environment Scotland has kindly agreed to open the event at 10.30am on Monday 13th March\, after which the morning will be free for drop-in participation sessions of the traditional skills with the demonstrators. On Tuesday 14th\, there will also be some time in the programme to try out these skills between the morning and afternoon school sessions. \nThe event is open to all and includes an information and exhibition tent which will be available throughout the two day event. It will feature careers information about training and jobs in traditional trades and information about caring for traditional buildings from CITB and Historic Environment Scotland. It will also have information for home owners regarding their rights and responsibilities in repairing and maintaining their own homes and also working together with other owners with whom they share a common interest to repair and maintain the common parts of their buildings. \n \n \nThis event is particularly focussed on raising the profile of traditional building skills; inspiring young people and also raising their awareness of the career opportunities which are available in this field.
